Austin City Limits Festival Tickets – Our Recommendations for 2010

It's hard to believe that summer is here again already. And while there are plenty of music festivals in these warm, sunny months, you should keep in mind that tickets are going to be selling fast for October's big festival, Austin City Limits. The 2010 lineup is a music critic's wet dream, but for those who aren't entirely sure what to see there, we offer up this helpful list of some of the most exciting acts to catch this year.

First, the headliners:

M.I.A.: Though she's not at the very top of the list of headliners—and is, in fact, kind of the odd woman out on the list—do make sure to carve out some time and check out Maya Arulpragasam, aka M.I.A. Best known today for her ubiquitous 2007 hit "Paper Planes," she's actually been hot stuff on the indie rock scene for a while. Her music is definitely not for everybody, as it is filled with bold agitprop lyrics and what sounds like a cross between hip-hop and mash-up. She blends traditional Sri Lankan folk music together with a lot of disparate influences, including rap and indie-rock, so there's a lot there to digest—and some listeners might find it just too spicy a dish. That said, she has a new record coming out this year, and the lead single, "Born Free," is great. For people who are already fans, she's a must-see at ACL.

LCD Soundsystem: This is a more obvious choice. James Murphy of LCD Soundsystem has been making jaded hipsters dance for years now with music that blends funk with house and art-rock, all the while cracking up observant listeners with self-deprecating lyrics and witticisms. His latest record, "This is Happening," has received universally high marks, and there are rumors that he may not record another LP under the Soundsystem name. Whether they're true or not, make sure you come to his stage ready and willing to sweat and move.

Gogol Bordello: There are a number of bands on the 2010 lineup that are known for having electrifying, weird or just plain trippy stage shows (the Flaming Lips come to mind), but we feel it's necessary to highlight Gogol Bordello, the fun and freaky gypsy punk group. Lead singer Eugene Hutz is known for surfing out over the crowds on the top of a massive drum, and the band's music is likely to turn the audience into a teeming mosh pit. This might not be the show for Norah Jones fans (she'll be performing here too).

The xx: Coming out of the U.K. last year, the xx has become a critical darling and is well-loved throughout the U.S. for their dark, seductive dream-pop. They have more of an indie-rock style, with breathy vocals and subdued sounds. This might actually be the perfect show for Norah Jones fans, or anyone who wants something a little bit down-tempo, a little bit sexy to take in.
