Uptown Theatre (Toronto)

Uptown Theatre (Toronto)

$78.07

Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. The Uptown Theatre was a historic movie theatre in Toronto, Ontario which was demolished in 2003. The entrance to the theatre was located on Yonge Street just south of Bloor. Like many theatres of the time (including the nearby Elgin Winter Garden Theatre) it was constructed so that only the entrance was on a major thoroughfare while the main building fronted on a side street. A bridge connected the two buildings. The 3000 seat theatre opened as Loews Uptown Theatre in 1920, originally serving as a venue for both vaudeville and films. It was designed by acclaimed theatre designer Thomas W. Lamb. Although built for different chains, the Uptown Theatre and Pantages Theatre (aka Imperial, Canon) were sisters, designed by the same architect, and opened less than a month apart. The Uptown was smaller than the Pantages and with a much smaller lobby, but the two had similar Yonge Street entrances and their auditoria were of the same style. ReDressing the Canon: Essays on Theatre and Gender

ReDressing the Canon: Essays on Theatre and Gender

$66.83

ReDressing the Canon examines the relationship between gender and performance in a series of essays which combine the critique of specific live performances with an astute theoretical analysis. Alisa Solomon discusses both canonical texts and contemporary productions in a lively jargonfree style. Among the dramatic texts considered are those of Aristophanes, Ibsen, Yiddish theatre, Mabou Mines, Deborah Warner, Shakespeare, Brecht, Split Britches, Ridiculous Theatre, and Tony Kushner. Bringing to bear theories of gender performativity upon theatrical events, the author explores: the double disguise of crossdressed boyactresses how gender relates to genre (particularly in Ibsens realism) how canonical theatre represented gender in ways which maintain traditional images of masculinity and femininity. A Hedonist's Guide to Toronto

A Hedonist's Guide to Toronto

$12

Still evolving and fostering its identity, Canada’s financial powerhouse hovers between being seriously conservative and wildly liberal (ie. you can’t drink on the street, but both men and women can walk about topless…) With its shiny skyscrapers, picturesque Old Town and bravely futuristic architecture, Toronto is cosmopolitan yet unpretentious, both diverse and unique. It’s also a thriving cultural hub: ‘T.O’ hosts a renowned International Film Festival, has the third largest theatre district in the world and is lousy with fabulous art galleries. Nightlife runs the gamut from kick back and relax to kick up your heels glamour, and a wide spectrum of restaurants follow suit. One in every two people living here was born outside of Canada, resulting in a cultural mosaic. So good news gourmands: Toronto is your global buffet.

Experimental Irish Theatre (Hardcover)

Experimental Irish Theatre (Hardcover)

$197.34

This book examines experimental Irish theatre that ran counter to the naturalistic `peasant` drama that became synonymous with Irish playwriting. Focusing on four marginalised playwrights who premiered works after the death of W.B. Yeats, it charts an alternative tradition linking the experimentations of the early Irish theatre movement with the innovations of contemporary Irish and international drama. Drawing on archival material never before published this study rediscovers the vibrant and dissenting smaller theatre companies and playwrights of a forgotten era in Irish theatre. In its concentration on the margins and its emphasis on the performative rather than literary affects of the plays, this book offers a fresh alternative telling of the Irish theatrical story, important works are recovered and the breadth of the Irish canon is widened. This book will prove attractive and satisfying to students, theatregoers, and readers of theatre history, performance studies, modernism, and Irish studies.
