Allergic to Cities
Rick and Suz Bear appeared allergic to Fate. Fate wove their paths across and around one another for years before they finally succumbed. Suz and a boyfriend first came to Steamboat to celebrate her 25th birthday. Heading back to their room at the Thunderhead hotel, Suz heard music. Mary McGregor was playing with Rick Bear's band. Suz knew she wanted to be in Steamboat.
Rick and his previous wife moved to Steamboat in 1971. Certain he could make a living selling posters of people skiing down the mountain, Posterman was born. In a red ski suit with red cape that said ‘Posters $15.00. Stop me,' Rick covered the mountain. The skiing was great but the business failed miserably. To pay the bills, Rick opened The Positive Negative a store selling cameras, film and doing portraits.
Catty corner, Suz' then-date had become her husband and became bar manager at The Short Branch, the longest coppertop bar in Colorado where Rick's band often played. Recently, Rick found a photograph of the band and realized the back of Suz's head was front row.
Rick and Suz left Steamboat for different reasons years later, then returned. Rick began a custom woodworking business and Suz started the first official cleaning service, ‘The Maids of Steamboat.' Both were single. Fate stepped in.
During Winter Carnival Rick decided to find someone to have a beer with. Living in Fairview he thought climbing over the mountain instead of taking the road would be faster. He found himself in snow up to his waist. "I was swimming through it," Rick says.
Meanwhile Suz was in her hottub saying "don't be such a slug." She felt she needed to get out. She found the motivation and cut across the Rodeo Grounds in snow up to her chest. By the time she got there the fireworks were over. Both she and Rick walked around without finding a friend, then went home.
Two weeks later they connected. Rick knew he had bumped into "the sweetest woman alive." Suz asked him if he wanted to go dancing at VFW (Veterans of Foreign Wars) bar. After that electric first date, Suz didn't talk to Rick for three months because she was "too busy working." Before long, however, it was history and they were married in 2003 barefoot under the Tulum ruins in Mexico.
"We believed in the dream of Steamboat so we found a way to be able to stay," says Rick. The opportunity came from Matt Scharf, graphic designer and artist who was working with Rick. Returning from a camping trip in Glacier National Park, Matt drove past the Purina Factory in Denver and had to pull over from a dog food stench induced coughing spell. At that moment he realized he must be Allergic to Cities. Rick encouraged Matt to pursue the project but Matt didn't like the dealing with details so sold the idea to Rick.
While selling shirts at the Farmer's Market a couple came by who loved the idea and set up an introduction with The Duck Company, a manufacturer in Denver. On Suz's birthday they walked into the meeting. Rick and Suz were faced with three men, arms defensively crossed. The idea sold. "It's an easy way to express your passions," says Jim Bruno one of the owners of The Duck Company. Today, Allergic to Cities is turning out new designs easily purchased on their website.
The curse of the Yampa Valley and a touch of fate brought Rick and Suz together. While their adventures on and off land have infused them with the energy of a couple of kids, sitting together at a local eatery, finishing each other's sentences, it's clear that Suz is still the sweetest heart Rick has ever known.
